Me Too–The New McCarthyism

If your goal is to drive a Democratic senator from office, you don’t get to be anonymous. What a coincidence that there are two of you and somehow you both decide to contact HuffPo on your own at the same time while insisting you remain anonymous.

The first accuser claims to be “a liberal person…I voted for him after this happened.” This sounds more like a government-ordered propaganda whispering campaign of the type used in Nazi Germany or the USSR than a “liberal person”.

This isn’t freedom of speech, this is libel when written, slander when spoken. When this country gets to the point where anonymous sources contacting an online newspaper can make accusations with absolutely no shred of evidence, then Trump has indeed won.

“In a statement to HuffPost, Franken said, “It’s difficult to respond to anonymous accusers and I don’t remember those campaign events.”

Damn right, Al. You don’t respond to anonymous accusers. Let them step forward and identify themselves and exactly which campaign events those alleged events occurred. There’s a thing called the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution and it covers anyone accused of sexual misconduct–or worse–so that their lives are not destroyed by unfounded accusations or innuendos. It gives every single person in this country the right to face their accusers in a court of law, to have all evidence presented, and to have their case decided by a jury of their peers. This whole Me Too thing has turned into a lynch mob with the media supplying the rope and torches. There are men who appear to be legitimately guilty of some accusation and some of them have admitted their guilt. Some of voluntarily quit their careers while others have had theirs ended by a unilateral decision by their employers based entirely by accusations totally unsupported by evidence, other than those men who have in part admitted their guilt.

This is the new McCarthyism and it has to stop. This has to stop now. Our country is being run by men who have complete disregard for the rule of law, for our Constitution. We cannot afford to allow ourselves to follow suit or the last shred of democracy that still faintly breathes on life support will die. And to be brain dead would make us all like the orange-headed moron in the White House.

So ladies, if you set out to ruin a man’s career and life, you better have the guts to step up and identify yourself and provide proof. Otherwise, you have the credibility of that orange-headed moron in the White House.

The Republicans Are Protecting George Zimmerman

It doesn’t make sense that George Zimmerman has gotten so much protection from the Sanford Police, the Florida State Attorney, and the Republican mass media. They’re all fighting his arrest and eventual trial. Why would this be?

Zimmerman is just a loose cannon with a homemade police officer badge but with a very real 9mm semiautomatic handgun. He thought he saw a black male in a hoodie sneaking around the condo complex in the dark and immediately profiled him as acting weird and up to something.

Zimmerman got out of his SUV and pursued Trayvon Martin even though the real cop on the other end of the phone told him “We don’t need you to do that” and Zimmerman answered “Okay”.

Everyone on the Left and the Right is expounding on why Stand Your Ground does or does not apply in this case. But Zimmerman’s own attorney, Craig Sonner, has stated Stand Your Ground doesn’t apply in this case, as has State Rep. Dennis Baxley, who introduced the bill into the Florida House, and former Florida governor, Jeb Bush, who signed it into law. Rick Scott, current Florida governor, took State Attorney Norm Wolfinger, who personally told Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee to turn Zimmerman loose, off the case. Again I ask: why would this be?

The answer is clear: the Florida Republicans enacted Stand Your Ground into law. Zimmerman claims he shot Trayvon Martin in self defense, which is what Stand Your Ground is all about. If the law doesn’t exist, maybe Zimmerman thinks twice before pulling out his gun. So it is being argued at the highest levels of the Republican Party that they have a serious exposure problem to this if  with this first high profile Stand Your Ground case, Zimmerman is arrested and goes to court. It won’t just be Zimmerman who’s put on trial but the Republican written, passed, and signed into law legislation. And this…is an election year.  And Jeb Bush, who signed the bill into law, is a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016. If Zimmerman is tried and convicted, Bush would be the “Republican Governor Who Killed Trayvon Martin”. Not exactly a campaign slogan he’d want to see on bumper stickers.

So, that’s why the Republicans along with their media surrogates have circled the wagons on this one. I think it’s possible the “temporarily stepped aside” Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee may have seen the political implications of a male black kid being killed in cold blood by a half Peruvian cop wannabe claiming protection under the law and communicated this concern to Wolfinger. I don’t know both men’s political affiliation but I could reasonably guess it’s Republican. But this would be why Wolfinger got so personally involved THAT NIGHT to the point of meeting with Lee to override the lead homicide detective’s recommendation to arrest Zimmerman on a manslaughter charge.

18 states have passed Stand Your Ground laws, some of these signed into law by Democratic governors who were cravenly pandering to conservative voters, or perhaps had received healthy campaign contributions from the NRA and ALEC-affiliated groups, or just didn’t have the guts to stand up to both. 31 states have passed the so-called “Castle doctrine” into law, which is what Stand Your Ground is derived from.

So, since both the NRA and ALEC funnel so much money—primarily to the Republican Party who introduced and passed the overwhelming majority of these bills, they could also be accused of being accessories to the killing of Trayvon Martin. Once again, not a good thing in an election year, especially with ALEC now bleeding corporate members and the loss of their dues.

This is why Fox, Limbaugh, and all the Republican surrogates are attempting to frame this case as a “liberal” and an “attempt at dividing the races” thing because those words their fans can understand. Most people who turn on right wing shows don’t know how to think logically and see the big picture: that’s exactly why they watch and listen to those shows—it’s done for them so they don’t have to.

George Zimmerman himself is small potatoes and no one on the Right gives a whit about him. It’s the Stand Your Ground law he symbolizes which is the Right Wing lightening rod. If this (literally) fatally flawed law goes down, then everyone who was responsible for getting it enacted—which are primarily Republicans up for re-election or will be in a couple of years—goes down with it. And believe me, there are quite a few Democrats who deserve to go down in flames with them.

Mayday! Mayday! The GOP Is Being Shot Down In Flames

There are a number of military analogies to apply to today’s GOP: being shot down in flames, a bunker mentality from being surrounded on all sides, on a suicide mission, launching all of their nuclear missiles hoping a few get through.

The national agenda the GOP has carefully and methodically assembled over the past 40 years is falling apart.  Assault on women’s rights, including anti-abortion? The damn women are standing up and fighting back. Why, you can’t even call a young female law student a slut and a prostitute on national radio and get away with it.

Lower corporate taxes? A Democratic President has usurped that issue our from under their very noses by proposing it as part of his budget.

ObamaCare? They may have to live with most or all of it for another two years if the Supreme Court decides to kick the whole thing down the road. And the more they know about it, the more Americans like ObamaCare.

Fear of foreigners? Immigrants, legal and otherwise, are tired of being pushed around and having their children forbidden from going to college after graduated from the public schools system.

Gun control? Murder one black teenage boy in cold blood and they make an international incident out of it.

Starting with Occupy Wall Street, continuing with the successful online campaign to get censorship of the Internet set aside—for now—all of the oppressed groups and people just fed up with right wing Republican tea party politics are standing up and saying “No more!” And they’re fighting back. Florida governor Rick Scott has announced a special state task force will be looking into the Trayvon Martin shooting as well as looking at changing any state laws that allowed it to occur (Stand Your Ground). The Department of Justice will be investigating the Sanford, Fl. police department (who just lost their police chief, temporarily or otherwise) for possible civil rights violations, incompetence, corruption, and racism.

Even as I write this, the Republicans are making “Hail Mary” passes across the country: attempting to gather marchers for “religious freedom” from health care reform, attempting to pass a flurry of new anti-woman legislation, attempting to pass even more voter suppression laws.

But they look at Wisconsin and see their Republican governor and four Republican state senators up for recall. One of the senators decided to resign while the resigning was good and she’s gone, taking with her the Republican majority in the state Senate.

Lastly, the GOP looks at the slate of clowns with big shiny red noses galumping around the country in their big, floppy clown shoes while the President sits in the Oval Office laughing with enjoyment at their performances. You’ve got Mittens The Clown dressed in a top hat and doing magic tricks with an Etch-A-Sketch. You’ve the Rick The Clown with the painted-on sad face, crying because the Devil is in the D.C. details. You’ve got Newt The Clown wearing a moon rocket and leaping unsuccessfully into the air as he runs around the stage. And finally, you’ve got Ron The Clown with his head barely peeking out from his giant clown suit, always falling down onto the floor and refusing any help to get back up. After the performance, President Obama comes out onstage like Ed Sullivan saying, “Thank you Republican clowns for that wonderful bit of comedy.”

But truth be told, the floppy shoes guys are flopping all over the country. Hardly any Republican voters beyond the troupe’s base is coming out to see them. Voting is way down among registered Republicans where primaries have so far been held. These guys are the 2012 version of the Not Ready For Primetime Players. Who knew the Republicans had a Minor League?

So, the GOP plane is going down in flames while all on board are throwing gasoline on the fire and not one of them knows how to land that thing.

Politics has always been cyclical. Don’t like being shut out of power? Just wait a few decades until your turn comes around again. But the Democrats can’t afford to get too comfy with their anticipated victory. After all, the Democratic ship of state’s got a few leaky holes and is taking on a little bit of water. The Keystone XL pipeline Oklahoma crude and Canadian tar sands oils flow into one hole. The Afghan War is pouring water into another hole. But the largest hole of all, the leak that could sink the ship, is the hole that American jobs keep falling through.  Yes, it hasn’t gotten any bigger, hasn’t shrunk by much, but it’s enough to possibly cause the Obama Administration to pull a Titanic.

But that’s where the Republican clown troupe comes in. They’ve proven themselves extremely adept at pumping water out of the ship and into their Clown Car as they perform their wonderful bit of comedy.

So, as the Republican Party sinks quickly on the Right, we bid a fond farewell to the presidential aspirations of the GOP as we mix metaphors and turn off our radar screens so we don’t see the search beacons leading us to the eventual crash site. The Republicans are big on the DIY (do-it-yourself) lifestyle. They got themselves into this mess, they can get themselves out. They’ve already begun eating their own to survive.

Department of Justice: Home Of The Whopper

“Due process and judicial process are not one and the same, particularly when it comes to national security,” Holder said. “The Constitution guarantees due process, not judicial process.”

With that statement, Attorney General Eric Holder joined the ranks of those who have made the greatest misleading or untrue statements in U.S. history.

“Saddam Hussein has chemical and biological weapons, and he is moving ever closer to developing a nuclear weapon.” – George W. Bush

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” – Bill Clinton

“I have earned every cent. And in all of my years of public life I have never obstructed justice. People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook. I’ve earned everything I’ve got.” – Richard M. Nixon

“I pledged in my campaign for the Presidency to end the [Vietnam] war in a way that we could win the peace. I have initiated a plan of action which will enable me to keep that pledge. The more support I can have from the American people, the sooner that pledge can be redeemed.” – Richard M. Nixon

Those are some big footprints to follow in, and Holder is no slouch when it comes to big feet. And the bigger they are, the harder their illogic reasoning falls to the ground. And this illogical reasoning is a whopper.

Let’s parse his statement. What exactly is “due process” which is guaranteed by the Constitution in both the 5th and 14th Amendments?

Here’s how it’s typically described:

  • Right to a fair and public trial conducted in a competent manner
  • Right to be present at the trial
  • Right to an impartial jury
  • Right to be heard in one’s own defense
  • Laws must be written so that a reasonable person can understand what is criminal behavior
  • Taxes may only be taken for public purposes
  • Property may be taken by the government only for public purposes
  • Owners of taken property must be fairly compensated

This seems to also describe the judicial process, mentioning a fair and public trial by impartial jury and all. But let’s find out for sure, shall we?

The Judicial Process

Article III of the Constitution of the United States guarantees that every person accused of wrongdoing has the right to a fair trial before a competent judge and a jury of one’s peers.

The Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments to the Constitution provide additional protections for those accused of a crime. These include:

  • A guarantee that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without the due process of law
  • Protection against being tried for the same crime twice (“double jeopardy”)
  • The right to a speedy trial by an impartial jury
  • The right to cross-examine witnesses, and to call witnesses to support their case
  • The right to legal representation
  • The right to avoid self-incrimination
  • Protection from excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments

That, folks, is straight from

Check it out yourself.

So, the judicial process under the Constitution guarantees US citizens that we can’t be deprived of life and stuff without “due process of law”.  Due process under the Constitution guarantees US citizens that we have the right to a “fair and public trial” which is further expanded on by judicial process. So, in effect, the one is dependent on the other and can’t be separated.

Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer, have never studied law, and do not pretend to be the high muckety-muck Attorney General of the United States.

And what was this illogic put to use to sell to the American people? That the United States has the right to hunt down an kill any American citizen anywhere in the world that the Government deems his hostile and represents a danger to the safety and well-being of the United States. In other words, if an Anwar al-Awlaki has been paling around with Osama bin Laden planning terrorist attacks against Americans here or in foreign countries but have no legal proof that he personally carried them out, there’s no need to attempt to capture him alive, extradite him back to a federal or military courtroom, prove the charges, and then imprison or execute him.  Nope, the President, acting upon the advice of his security and military advisers can simply order “Take him out”, and one drone bomb later, al-Awlaki is history.

Now, I’m in no way arguing for leniency for avowed terrorist enemies of the United States. If I had lost friends and/or family in the 9/11 attack, or at Fort Hood or aboard an airplane, I’d take a 9mm Glock to the suspected terrorist mastermind who’s an American citizen and first kneecap him and then work my way up.  But that’s me, I’m not the United States government sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.

This isn’t the first hole the Obama administration has poked in the Constitution. The USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act of 2006—which was extended by Congress and Obama, NDAA for 2012, the Espionage Act of 1917 all precede this legal opinion rendered by Holder.

The U.S. Supreme Court has already decided that the police can break down the door to your home to arrest you—based on hearsay or what they might think they overhear outside your home-without a warrant. Even if they have a warrant but that warrant is written incorrectly, as long as the police in their professional opinion think you should have been arrested, that’s just dandy with Chief Justice John Roberts and the gang. So our domestic rights under the Constitution have been steadily eroding since 2001. What the Obama administration is now enacting is the erosion of constitutionally-guaranteed rights to any American citizen at any time anywhere in the world for any reason for an indeterminate length of time. You see, you, an American citizen, can be snatched from the streets anywhere and held in some prison without ever being told why you were snatched and imprisoned. Maybe you don’t get tortured or maybe you do but the Commandant has plausible deniability over knowing about it. Maybe you’re sitting in a Pakistani café and your table explodes, or the waiter slips behind and delivers your check behind your left ear. Or you’re camping in the desert and a drone bomber flies overhead and rains bombs on your picnic.

Yes, realistically speaking, almost none of us will ever experience these scenarios. But this erosion of personal and civil rights has been a common tactic in every country where the democratically-elected government was overthrown and the people subjected to tyrannical rule. I don’t believe that President Obama is a tyrannical dictator—but this is the way it starts too often, with the slow erosion of basic rights with the acquiescence of a people kept so frightened by the enemy boogeyman held up to them by their government they’ll agree to anything to feel safe and protected by that same government.

Eric Holder is wrong, and not nearly enough people in the media are saying so. I would have expected this type of specious argument from Republican Alberto Gonzales, the 2nd Attorney General under Republican President George W. Bush. But not an A.G. under the Democratic President Barack Obama. When the Democrats start to resemble the Republicans, it reminds one of the famous Zen koan, “What is the sound of one political party running America?”

The Year Of The Woman Voter

I just got it.  I just got why the Republicans in Congress have made this the Year of the Attack on Women.

Women are scary creatures to men. Whether you’re in jr. high school or a dance club in Hollywood, a man has to walk up to a woman to ask her to dance.  All the while he’s wondering how he’ll hide his embarrassment if she says no.

During sex, a man has to enter a woman. As soon as he is inside that magic portal, she is in full control. And at the moment of ejaculation, he delivers all he is to her.  For that one instant, he is wide open, helpless, vulnerable, under her total control. Republicans don’t like to be wide open, helpless, vulnerable, under total control to anyone, especially a woman. In fact, they are threatened by this. Although they might allow themselves to be under the control of a very wealthy woman who funds their campaign.  Feeling threatened has its price, after all.

This is what is fueling the wave upon wave of Republican-sponsored bills trying to wrest control of women’s bodies away from women. How best to remove the threat that women present to Republican men than to take control of the very bodies that control them? So, Republican men have decided THEY want to be in control purse strings when it comes for paying for women’s birth control. THEY want to be in control of approving or denying abortions. When a woman has to come to a Republican man to beg for the right of control over her body, it kind of makes up for her refusing to dance with him back in jr. high.

Another reason why Republican men fear women is that 41% of them identify themselves as Democrats. So Republican men look out over the political landscape and see that almost half of those scary vaginas are Democratic vaginas. Now the panic attacks start to set in.

Of course, none of this explains why some Republican women support the efforts of Republican men to take control of their bodies away. Well, why do some women continue to live with the men who physically abuse them and refuse to press charges against them? I can’t explain that either but it just may be a Republican thing.  Some would say it’s a religious issue, but with the present Republican Party politics and religion have been intertwined and inextricably linked together.

This past week, only one woman Republican, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, voted against the defeated Blunt Amendment, a bill that would have given employers a way out of covering any health care they disagreed with on “moral” or “religious” grounds in their health plans. By the way, Sen. Snowe is saying “adios” to the Senate this year perhaps because she is only interested in controlling her own body and not other women’s.

Three Republican Senators in Democratic clothing voted for the amendment. This is all I shall say about them.

If all this assaulting on women’s rights wasn’t enough to get women up and angry this year, providence delivered to the Democrats boys for the recruiting posters: Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Russ Limbaugh. Romney merely supported the Blunt Amendment. Santorum says the devil is hiding inside a women’s vagina and that’s why a good Catholic President is our only defense against the dark side. But Rush Limbaugh…Limbaugh took the fight against women to where no man has gone before. He parked his hulking expanse behind his microphone and during his radio show, with both hands firmly on his huge cigar, verbally beat up a woman. A young, single woman. A young, single woman who’s a law student. And probably a Democrat.

After Limbaugh opened up his mouth, the heavens filled with the wrath and outrage of American women opened up and poured down upon him. What Limbaugh forgot is that women talk to each other. A lot. Women talk to each other and they make plans. They make plans to do things together. Plans like…changing party affiliations to vote Democratic in a national general election.  Plans like…going down to the polls together to vote Democratic or throwing a party to fill out their absentee ballots together.

What is the sound of American women standing up in unison against the Republican men who would have these women kneeling before them? It’s the sound of the Republican men’s knees slapping together in fear. A woman lying in bed in front of you can be scary enough. But standing up in defiance? Republican men’s entire legs are knocking against each other now.

According to the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Dragon. Uh uh, unless the he dragon is a she dragon. And the Year of the Attack On Women may be over. For this new year is very much shaping up to be the Year Of The Woman Voter when women flex their muscles in the voting booth, and it may be the Republicans who will be draggin’ their asses out of Congress.

Rush Limbaugh, The Great White Whale: Thar He Blows His Job!

Rush Limbaugh is a slut. Rush Limbaugh is a prostitute—but with a twist. Prostitutes are paid to fuck people. Limbaugh is paid to fuck over people. The slander job he did on Sandra Fluke was just another assignment for the highly-paid right wing hit man. He obviously thought this was just another milk run. He didn’t even bother to write out his notes first to gather his thoughts. He just winged it off the cuff as he’s done for decades. And why not? He always got away with it. He practically calls the President of The United States “boy” and childishly mangles the name of the First Lady—and gets away with it. Sandra Fluke was just a regular person, a non-entity who’s first name he didn’t even have to get right, or maybe he intentionally called her Susan just to unveil his total contempt for her. She was just a little girl who dared to stand up in the face of Republicans to tell them they had no right to legislate against and restrict birth control methods for women and how they’re paid for. Little pipsqueak had to be made an example of. After his show Limbaugh thought smugly to himself “That should take care of that.”

He was wrong. For the first time in his long career which had been supported and bankrolled by the Republican Party, he had misread both his audience and the size of the backlash mounting against him. He could get away with virtually calling President Obama the n-word in dog whistlespeak, but you don’t call an intelligent young woman who is living her life no different than millions of other women in this country a “slut”, a “prostitute” and insist that she post videos of her sex life online. Just like the Republicans finally overreached with their narrowly-averted government shutdown over the debt ceiling, Limbaugh overreached in trying to crush what to him was just another Feminazi. It came across as a verbal raping of Ms. Fluke, with Limbaugh pompously puffing on his big, fat cigar after the deed.

Limbaugh’s problem is that due to the immense amount of money he’s been handed by the Republicans and their using their influence to place him in 500 radio markets as well as Armed Forces Radio, he truly believed he existed on a plane above mortal men. Well, just look, any politician who dared criticize him was summarily taken to the woodshed and get the shit beaten out of him while being given the Word. And the Word is you don’t ever—ever—oppose Rush in public. And the politician would dutifully and humbly walk back his statement, otherwise after the next election a new Limbaugh lackey would be occupying that Congressional seat.

But not this time. Exhibit A:

Republicans know that their Great White Whale has been lifted on his own harpoon and there’s blood in the water. No one’s going to the Limbaugh woodshed this time around. To not criticize him—no matter how tepidly as Mitt Romney is doing—would mean being the targets of the same Limbaugh backlash come this November.

Currently there are three and probably many more petitions being circulated online to have Limbaugh censured by the Republican Party, to pressure his sponsors to drop him (both Sleep Train and Sleep Number Beds already have), and to have Premier Networks—his syndicator—do the right thing and drop the bastard off in the nearest dumpster. Where would one find links to these petitions and sponsors? Read on:

That should be enough to get you going and to get your voice heard

Don Imus was the target of a similar backlash when he called the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos”. MSNBC dropped him like the hot, racist potato he was. Limbaugh is clearly both racist AND sexist. His sponsors and syndicator are feeling the heat of his great white potatohood now and it must be clear to them it shows no sign of cooling off.  Limbaugh must follow Imus as one the Great Has Beens of Media History. Just wondering about after he loses his health plan, how will Limbaugh afford the cost of his Viagra and oxycontin? It’s got to be A LOT more than $1000 yearly in birth control pills. I just know MY tax dollars ain’t going to pay for his drugs. I’ll get my Democratic congressman right on it.

Rush Limbaugh has always called himself an “entertainer”. If anyone continues to be “entertained” by an onslaught of character assassination delivered with vitriol that is so overtly relished by this Great White Whale, that person needs to be dropped in the same dumpster with the beast. They can then spend the end of their days together in a landfill until a time in the distant future where their remains can actually be put to use for the benefit of mankind by fertilizing forested land where the spotted owl shall thrive and the trees can help reverse climate change around the earth.  Limbaugh would be so happy.

The Hyphenated or Forward Slash American

I dislike African-/American. I dislike Mexican-/American. I also dislike Italian-/American and Chinese-/American.  Discern a pattern here? I assure you it’s non-racist and non-bigoted.

What I dislike is the practice of putting the country of origin before America, emphasizing where one’s family came from before where they are now. It just serves to fragment us into separate ethnic camps.  In my day, we were taught in social studies that America was the great Melting Pot. All the different ingredients poured in, I mean, were poured into the pot where they all blended together into the stew called Americans.

Why is that people who cry “America First!” are so eager to put another country’s name in front of America? That’s what the hyphen or the forward slash does—it separates us from America. I’m all for being proud of one’s ethnic identity and heritage, but when our foreparents came to this shore past the Statute of Liberty, walked onto Ellis Island, and later took the oath of citizenship, they made a pact to swear allegiance to the American flag, not the Greek-/American flag, or the Lebanese-/American flag.  There are two exceptions to the oath takers: blacks who were brought here as slaves and Native Americans. I dislike Native American. I dislike it because it’s inaccurate. Whether they are called Native Americans or Indians they did not originate here, unless America 3000 years or so ago annexed Asia including the foot path across the Bering Strait. There are no indigenous people here. We’re all immigrants, folks! And although American Indian is also inaccurate, it’s a lot closer to “American indigenous” if that’s the point someone is trying to make.

And what about the term Native American? What’s to stop tribes from taking it further and describing themselves as Navajo-/Native American-/American or Seminole-/Native American-/American or Snohomish-/Native American-/American or Cherokee-/Native American-/American? And what about the Sioux? Are they Dakota-/Sioux/Native American-/American or Lakota etc. or Teton etc. or Santee, etc. or Nakota etc. or Yankton etc.? But then you got your Oglala, etc. Lakota Sioux and Mdeakantonwon, etc. Dakota Sioux and both Upper AND Lower Yankton-/Yankton and on and on. It would be the same thing when dealing with Arabic tribes and Palestinians. But I digress.

Let’s take these hyphenated or forward slash labels out to their absurd conclusion. My kids can describe themselves as Russian-/Romanian-/Polish-/Irish-/German-/Native American-/American. What one ethnic group could they possibly belong to?

The Israelis and the Iranians are very aware of their ethnic origins and look how well that’s working out for them.

But we still haven’t reached the limits of absurdity. We’ve yet to arrive at Jewish/- or Christian-/ or Muslim-/ or Presbyterian-/ or Episcopalian-/ or Lutheran-/ or Baptist-/ or Southern Baptist-/ or Mormon-/ or Seventh-Day Adventist-/ or Jehovah’s Witness-/ or Buddhist-/ or Agnostic-/ or Atheist-/ Pantheist-/ or ad infinitum added to the ethnic mix of origin names. Let’s go further: Democratic-/, Republican-/, Green-/, Peace and Freedom-/, Independent-/, and blah blah blah.

And with each additional name, the groups keep getting smaller and smaller until your children are in their own group separate from yours.

So, forgive me if I don’t get into the whole hyphenated or forward slash thing. I refuse to do it for skin color, too. There are no Black or Caucasian or Red or Yellow or Brown Americans to me.

I’ll say it again: the practice of putting the country of origin before America, emphasizing where one’s family came from before where they are now, just serves to fragment us into separate ethnic camps. It puts ME in front of US. And take a look around our country today: it’s US against THEM, them being the powers that be that are intent on helping us build our separate camps.

So, I for one will eschew all of these hyphenated or forward slash American labels. Because when the day comes and the space aliens land and interbreed with humans, I don’t want to even begin to think of learning how to spell THOSE names…
