Yeah, this commentary is very similar to the one I posted 2 days ago. But the news article is more vitriolic in its attack on Bernie Sanders and I will not let that go by, especially when it’s so wrong-headed and incendiary and because…Bernie and his words should not be the subjects of these attacks. Once again, blinkered people are lashing out in the wrong direction and at the wrong person. Trump and his admin, Mitch McConnell, and Paul Ryan are legitimate targets for wrath and outrage. Once again, if these black critics of Bernie are Democrats, all they’re doing is further polarizing and weakening the Democratic Party. Yes, Bernie is an Independent. Yes, Bernie’s weak spot has alway been in effectively discussing black issues. But compare his record on civil rights with that of many white Democrats in Congress. And of the first black president of the United States.
And that’s why this article is full of crap. Just because Obama was the first black president he should be exempt from criticism? He gets special dispensation on observance (I won’t say anniversary) of the date of MLK Jr.’s assassination. What does one have to do with the other?
John F. Kennedy was the first Catholic president–yet every year on and around the date of his assassination there are documentaries both praising and criticizing him and his presidency. There is much to criticize his presidency about. And something else that this writer so all in a huff didn’t mention. MLK Jr. was assassinated because he had become so a strong voice for equal civil rights for blacks. Yet black men are being murdered by cops–both white and black–several times a week right now. Poverty and unemployment remain endemic among the black population and the Dems and Obama when they had the chance and the power did nothing to alleviate it. In 2014, the Dems helped pass and Obama signed the Farm Act of 2014 which slashed SNAP benefits over 10 years by $8.7 BILLION.
So, I don’t want to hear from all the outraged “Barack Obama supporters” black celebrities how Bernie was out of line to make the speech he did. Black celebrities should join his outrage that 50 years later on the date King was killed, not a lot has changed as far as civil rights. And currently, even the most important civil rights have been and continue to be eroded. In other words, not much as changed and the Trump admin–especially Attorney General Jeff sessions–is working to reverse as many civil rights gains and advances as executive orders and policies can achieve.
Only the limited thinkers and close-minded loudly call for the death of the messenger when they refuse to accept the truth of his message. And the truth supersedes everything, including the messenger and the day the message was delivered. And while you black celebrities are at it, please show me another white politician who has so vehemently defended civil rights for EVERYONE and in turned lashed out and fought against those who have dedicated themselves to depriving all Americans who aren’t “them” of these constitutionally-mandated civil rights. You can’t. You need Bernie’s voice out there. Stop trying to shut him up.
