Cliven Bundy, Folly Rancher

Cliven Bundy has stated he doesn’t acknowledge that the federal government exists. Well sir, someday he might have a “beef” about his cattle or the state of Nevada’s right to levy taxes on him, or something. He might wind up on the losing side of a lawsuit and decide to appeal the verdict. Let’s say he appeals the ruling to the Nevada state supreme court and it also rules against him. Bundy still disagrees and decides to take his case to…where? The US District Court? The US Court of Appeals Ninth Circuit? The US Supreme Court? Sorry, but in Cliven’s world none of these courts exist, do they? Does he then declare that he doesn’t recognize the existence of the Nevada state government–or ANY government, for that matter? How far into the realm of absurdity would he push this?

What if due to climate change a drought hits the land he’s stolen from the BLM and his cattle die of thirst, or a freak blizzard hits (like it did through Montana and the Dakotas last year) and just about all his livestock freezes to death? Who does he file a claim with to try to regain some of his losses? Not the Nevada USDA Farm Service Agency and its Livestock Indemnity Program and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program because the agency, being part of the federal government, doesn’t exist. What about a local, independent Rancher Relief program, run by ranchers like Bundy. Wait, there are no ranchers like Bundy because they all pay their grazing fees, grazing fees–right?–and might resent the Bundy family’s decades of a grazing fee-free ride which made their cattle operations less profitable than Bundy’s? Does Cliven Bundy then become a man without a country, cattle, and a livelihood? Doesn’t seem like he’s thought this thing through very well…
